Steve Sersic has been practicing law in Lake County, Indiana for over thirty years.
He has devoted the great majority of his career to the representation of injured people, and tried a large number of cases to jury, achieving many million dollar plus and other high value settlements and verdicts. He has successfully argued cases before the Indiana Court of Appeals, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Indiana Supreme Court. In 2024, he was named Indiana Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association along with his co-counsel on a case argued before the Indiana Supreme Court that resulted in a change in the law which he hopes will help all injured people obtain a jury trial. He has represented people in automobile and truck crashes; falls on property due to ice, snow, and dangerous conditions like defective stairs, potholes, and uneven sidewalks; dog attack cases; bad faith and improper claim handling by insurance companies, and other cases where people were injured due to negligence and failure to follow the law by insurance companies, individuals, and businesses.
He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago (With Honors, Phi Beta Kappa) and is a graduate of Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law in Bloomington.
He has served as the Lake County Bar Association’s President (2018), Secretary, and Board Member. He has served as a Delegate to the Indiana State Bar Association and a Member of its Board of Governors. He has served as a Board Member of the Indiana Trial Lawyer’s Association. He has been active in Committees in the legal profession including the Lake County Bar Legal Support Section (for which he received their “Founder’s Award”) and the Alternate License/Practice Model Task force for the Indiana State Bar Association. He has also coached and/or judged Indiana High School Speech and Debate, “We the People” – a civics and public speaking program for high school students where they can learn about law, and Indiana High School “Mock Trial” – where high school students can learn about trials and court procedures by actually advocating in real courtrooms in mock cases. He also has enjoyed being a Judge of Moot Court at his Law School – giving law students an opportunity to learn to argue in front of appellate courts – the courts who decide appeals.
It was a great honor of his to receive the President’s Award for service from the Lake County Bar Association in 2021.
Steve loves to spend his spare time with his soulmate and the love of his life, Michelle, hanging out, riding e bikes, spending time with grandkids, taking road trips, and being together with family. His daughter, Eva, is the light of his life and nothing is better than spending time with her.
